The development of Fayetteville shale play and its implications

The great success of “shale gas revolution” in U.S. has had a significant impact on the world’s energy structure and attracted worldwide attention. Although a large number of scholars have analyzed the successful experience of U.S. shale gas from technology, economy, policy and management, few have detailed dissected the development practice of individual shale gas play. Through an in-depth analysis of the development practices of the Fayetteville shale gas play, the second commercial shale gas play in North America, six inspirations can be obtained. (1)Continuous improvement of the technology and the learning curve attribute to the reduction of cost and increase of the shale gas production. (2)Fully understanding of the complexity of shale gas play and identification of the sweet spot precisely would benefit to the reduction of the uncertainty and risk of unconventional gas development. (3)Shale gas reservoirs show some heterogeneity, therefore the pilot test and extend development step by step are usually used to improve the proportion of high-yield wells. (4)The long-term performance in Fayetteville shale wells were not altered after changing the horizontal well orientation from NW-SE to NS since the lease lines are oriented NS. (5)The lateral length grew longer and longer, while the technological progress has led to a sustained decline in cost and the overall benefits of long horizontal wells improved year by year. (6)A large amount of wells have to be brought into production to maintain a constant annual production level due to the lower gas rate of shale gas wells and its sharp initial decline. The research results have important guidance and reference significance for the exploration and development of shale gas in China, which is conducive to the rapid development of China’s shale gas industry.
