Characteristics and Hydrocarbon Potential of the Upper Cretaceous Source Rock in the Rio Muni Basin

Abstract

Exploration in the Rio Muni Basin is currently poor.The primary source rock within the Rio Muni Basin is the Aptian-Albian shale sequence that is the reported source for the oil fields.However,new drilling in the new district reveals that it developed a thick layer of gray-black shale in the Upper Cretaceous,but it has never attracted enough attention.A series of geochemical data demonstrated that the Upper Cretaceous shale is enriched in organic matter,which is at early mature-mature stage,with moderate abundance (TOC:0.6%-2.24%,average 1.03%) and fair quality (mainly type Ⅱ and Ⅲ).Although the maceral confirmed the presence of a large amount of terrestrial organic matter input,however,the kerogen type is dominated by type Ⅱ2.It is probably due to the far distance transportation of the terrigenerous organic matter by ancient rivers,and mixture with marine organic matter deposited in anoxic marine environment.So that the organic matter has sapropel features,and is both oil-prone and gas-prone.Basin modeling indicates that the Turonian of the Upper Cretaceous marine source rocks entered the oil window in the Eocene,and is still in the stage of primary hydrocarbon generation,the equivalent source rocks in the west slope depression may have generated hydrocarbon and accumulated.Thus,the Upper Cretaceous marine shale is a set of source rocks with good hydrocarbon generation potential,especially,the Turonian shale with large thickness is a set of good marine source rock in Rio Muni Basin.
