Geochemical Characteristics of the Gases Sourced from the Carboniferous-Permian Coal Measures:A Case Study of Ordos and Bohai Bay Basins,China

Abstract

Through analysis and comparison of the gas chemical and stable carbon isotopic compositions of 67 gas samples sourced from the Carboniferous-Permian (C-P) coal-measures between the Ordos Basin and the Bohai Bay Basin,combining with the geological condition analysis,conclusions are obtained as follows:Most of the gases are coal-derived gas,and the little amount of oil-type gases in the Jingbian Gasfield in the Ordos Basin were generated by the Permian Taiyuan Formation limestone.Most of the gases in the Ordos Basin are dry,while the ones in the Bohai Bay Basin are mainly wet gas.Carbon isotope reversals (i.e.δ13C213C3 ) happened to 20 percent of the total gas samples in the Ordos Basin.While up to 27% of the total gas samples in the Bohai Bay Basin have the carbon isotope reversals,and δ13C313C4 is the main type.Both the carbon isotope reversals in the two basins were caused by the mixture of coal-derived gases of different maturities.The gases in the Ordos Basin were mainly generated by the mature to high-mature source rocks of C-P coal measures.The gases in the Bohai Bay Basin were mainly generated by the mature C-P source rocks,and a little part of the gas were derived from the high-over mature C-P source rocks,and these gases are mainly produced in the Dongpu Depression.The maturity and the organic matter composition are the main controlling factors which caused the δ13C1  difference of the gases in the two basins.The values of δ13C213C1  andδ13C313C1 decrease with the increasing of the thermal maturity of the source rocks showing the carbon isotopic values of methane and its homologues become more and more close as the gas-generating process.
