Exploration Potential of Coal derived Gas in Tarim Basin

Abstract

Tarim basin is one of the important oil and gas producing areas in China, and a series of large\|medium size gas fields such as Kela-2 have been discovered till present. Although there is plentiful natural gas resource, the proven degree is still very low. Thus, the Tarim basin is one of the most potential basins for natural gas exploration in China. In the 7 of the 10 large-size gas fields of Tarim basin, natural gas as a coal-derived gas is sourced from the Triassic and Jurassic coal measures. The distribution of coal\|derived gas controlled by Triassic-Jurassic coal measures is in the Kuqa depression and its southern adjacent area as well as the southwestern depression of the basin. The potential area for coal-derived gas exploration in the Tarim basin is as follows:Deep-seated tight sandstone gas in the Kuqa depression which has favorable reservoir conditions and large exploration potentials, the southwest depression which is poor in proven degree and great for discovering more coal-derived gas fields, the Yingjisu sag which is a exploration prospect of lithological gas pools due to one of the lower\|middle Jurassic subsidence centers.
