Difference between Middle and Lower Jurassic Source Rocks in Northern Margin of Qaidam Basin and Potential Exploration Significances

Abstract

Distribution of sedimentary facies obviously controls effective source rock in the northern margin of Qaidam basin. Source rocks in the area mainly include four types like as mudstone, coal, carbonaceous mudstone and shale. There are obvious differences between their hydrocarbon generation potential and characteristics of biomarkers. Oil-source correlation indicates that petroleum in Lenghu 3, Nanbaxian and Mabei oilfield would be derived from sapropelite. Oil and gas exploration in the northern Margin of Qaidam basin should not only pay attention to Jurassic coal measure, but also to sapropelic. These high quality sapropelic sources mainly consist in the middle Jurassic mudstone and oil shale, located in the Saishiteng and Yuka sag. Favorable exploration area for these hydrocarbon source rocks should focus on the north of Maxian fault and Lenghu 6 and Lenghu 7 tectonic belts.
