Diagenesis and Main Factors Controlling the Tertiary Reservoir Properties of the Panyu Low-uplift Reservoirs, Pearl River Mouth Basin

Abstract

Based on analyses of thin sections, SEM observations, casting thin sections and fluorescence thin sections, X-ray diffraction analyses, and mercury porosimetry measurements of the Panyu low\|uplift Tertiary reservoir sandstones, this paper shows that diagenesis of the sandstones includes mechanical compaction, cementation, metasomatism and dissolution. Sedimentary facies are the main macroscopic factors controlling the reservoir quality. Compaction and cementation are the main factors destroying reservoir properties. Carbonate cements greatly preserved the porosity in eodiagenesis because it had prevented significant early mechanical compaction and its dissolution in the late diagenesis generated secondary pores. Dissolution of feldspar grains and lithic fragments created secondary porosity zones, which improved the reservoir properties.
