Abstract

A total of 355 giant gas fields were discovered in the world by the end of 2002.They are concentrated in Western Siberia, Zagros, Persian Gulf, Kara Kum, US Gulf of Mexico, North Sea and Carnarvon Basins. Gas in these giant fields is mostly trapped in the Permian to Quaternary reservoirs. The formation and distribution of these fields are mainly controlled by regional tectonic setting, effective source rocks, favorable reservoir-seal assemblages, and trap types. The complex geological settings of Chinese petroliferous basins lead to a situation in which gas exploration will be a long process and gas reserve additions will continue for a considerable period of time in China. Greater efforts should be paid on studing seals and exploration of oil-type gas and oil-thermal cracked gas.
